ST. THOMAS (HOLYWOOD) 8 7 8 7 8 7Motetts or Antiphons (1792) Samuel Webbe & 1782 An Essay on the Church Plain C
1. Sing, my tongue, the Saviour’s glory,
Of his cross the mystery sing;
Lift on high the wondrous trophy,
Tell the triumph of the King:
He, the world’s Redeemer, conquers
Death, through death now vanquishing.

2. Born for us, and for us given,
Born a man like us below,
He, as man with men abiding,
Dwelt, the seeds of truth to sow;
And at last faced death undaunted,
Thus his greatest deed to show.

3. On the night of that Last Supper,
Seated with His chosen band,
He, the paschal victim eating,
First fulfills the law’s command;
Then as food to all His brethren
Gives Himself with His own hand.

4. Word made flesh!
His word life-giving,
Gives his flesh our meat to be,
Bids us drink his blood, believing,
Through his death, we life shall see:
Blessèd they who thus receiving
Are from death and sin set free.

5. Low in adoration bending,
Now our hearts our God revere;
Faith her aid to sight is lending,
Though unseen the Lord is near;
Ancient types and shadows ending,
Christ our paschal Lamb is here.

6. Praise for ever, thanks and blessing,
Thine, O gracious Father, be;
Praise be thine,
O Christ, who bringest
Life and immortality;
Praise be thine,
thou quickening Spirit,
Praise through all eternity.

7. ******Another translation:

8. Sing, my tongue, the Savior’s glory,
Of His flesh the mystery sing,
Of the blood, all price exceeding,
Shed by our immortal King,
Destined, for
the world’s redemption,
From a noble womb to spring.

9. Of a pure and spotless virgin,
Born for us, His love to show,
He, as man, with man conversing,
Stayed, the seeds of truth to sow;
Then He closed
in wondrous fashion,
This His life on earth below.

10. On the night of that Last Supper,
Seated with His chosen band,
He, the paschal victim eating,
First fulfills the law’s command;
Then as food to all His brethren
Gives Himself with His own hand.

11. Christ, the Word made Flesh,
by speaking,
Earthly bread to flesh He turns;
Wine becomes
His blood so precious—
Unconceived in human terms!
Hearts sincere perceive this marvel;
Faith its lessons quickly learns.

12. Down in adoration falling,
This great sacrament we hail;
Over ancient forms of worship
Newer rites of grace prevail;
Faith tells us that Christ is present
When our human senses fail.

13. To the everlasting Father,
And the Son Who made us free,
And the Spirit, God proceeding,
From them each eternally,
Be salvation, honor, blessing,
Might and endless majesty.
