1. O joyful hope, in weary hearts awaking:
O blessed voice of pardon and release:
Tidings of grace for souls oppressed and aching;
Telling of liberation, life and peace.

Refrain.
“Comfort ye, My people, saith your God:
My people, comfort ye!”

2. Long was the night of exiled Israel’s sorrow,
Bitter the hours of suffering and fear,
Till on her darkness dawned the light of morrow,
When prophet lips proclaimed redemption near.

Refrain.
“Comfort ye, My people, saith your God:
My people, comfort ye!”

3. Now for mankind a brighter dawn has broken;
Bidding the gloom of sin and death be gone.
God’s voice of love His perfect words has spoken;
Jesus the light of all the world is born.

Refrain.
“Comfort ye, My people, saith your God:
My people, comfort ye!”

4. Lift up your voice, O men, in exultation;
Tell every land the tidings you have heard:
Jesus proclaims His people’s liberation;
Speaks in the Cross His Father’s saving word.

Refrain.
“Comfort ye, My people, saith your God:
My people, comfort ye!”
